What do I do about a love sick horse?

by Kristen May
(NH)

I just got 2 horses last week and they were only in the pasture an hour, when they discovered the neighbor's have horses. Since then my mare has stood at the fence, staring over at them. She hasn't eaten much and it's driving my gelding crazy!!! He keeps pacing and circling her and hasn't eaten much, either. They have completely trodded down the grass, leaving not much to eat, when they finally decide to eat. Any suggestions?

Answer: Well I must say, You got me on this one... How far apart are the horses, can they reach each other over the fence? If so, you might want to keep a close eye on them, because they will fight through the fence and end up getting hurt. Try and lead her away from the fence and feed them somewhere away from view of the other horses. Hopefully in a couple of days, she will get over it and move on..Let me know what happens. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
