WE NEED HORSE SLAUGHTER

by Oregon State
(Corvallis Or)

So why do so many people think horse slaughter is such a bad thing? Is it because they are pets? They are large and fuzzy? Well I got news for you; beef cattle are the same way. They can be pets, buds, friends or whatever. Have you ever been to a 4-H/FFA fair? All these animals (beef, lambs, pigs) they are all friends and pets to these children. But these kids know that these are part of the food chain. What is the difference with horses?
Everyone who is against horse slaughter are not educated about the facts. All they think is “oh no we can’t kill them there to cute” well its part of the food chain. If you don’t want to eat it, you don’t have to. Why are they trying to take away a very big/ needed industry and many jobs? There are so many unwanted horses out there right now that are starving to DEATH because people like you who is closing down these horse slaughter plants.
There are so much money wasted trying to save a lamed up horse that could be used in making plants better for horses but yet again those people are stupid and don’t think of that kind of things. Anyways put you feelings aside and step back and just do some research on the other side and you will quickly find how important it is to the U.S. to have these plants economically and to control the horse population and to save tax money they there wasting fighting this stupid battle.

No More Slaughter
by: Mountain Kitty

There are a couple of solutions that will, if given the chance, work. One is that state governments can set aside more funding for people who love horses and want to start rescue facilities where strict regulations are put in place for the adoption procedure up to and including the investigation of potential adopters. The second is to put in place a mandatory geld policy if people do not intend to breed their horse. I agree with the poster who said our history was made on the backs of horses. They are part of our heritage and future generations deserve to have the same experiences we have had with horses in our lives. I suggest that those of you that love the idea of horse slaughter watch some of the videos of how they are treated in the Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses. No More Slaughter! It's cruel and unnecessary!

WOW
by: Anonymous

To the University Students.
I think beings you think we need horse slaughter, that you should be the next one to be slaughtered, while alive, conscious. The way it is done is so inhumane it is ridiculous. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Idiot

'Everyone who is against horse slaughter are not educated about the facts. All they think is ?oh no we can?t kill them there to cute? well its part of the food chain.'
Sweeping comment much?! This is rude and incorrect, I'm against horse slaughter because of the transport issues and the conditions in which they are kept. I would have absolutely no objection of the horses where bred for meat and kept in a safe environment leading up to their slaughter.
It's the fact that the horses are bought or even stolen (horses which may be well trained, intelligent creatures)transported for up to 24 hours with no food of water, beaten and maimed to death. This is not acceptable, the horses are still concious when their throats are cut, hung up by their legs. I think it's disgusting and maybe you don't know all the facts, actually I know you don't know all the facts, idiot.

are you kidding me
by: Anonymous

Are you freaking kidding me dont you see how they kill these animals sure yes maybe we do need horses for food but there is a way in doing that and sure as heck it is not by torturing them until they bleed to death that is outrageous and sick. you say we need to stop thinking about them they are just apart of the food chain are you serious no we need to stop thinking about ourselves and have a reality check and actually see through the horses eyes and what there going through it is not just about how cute they are they have feelings to its not like you stick a knife in there back and they dont feel it how stupid are you.

Your an ass
by: Save The Creature of Our Country

How in the world can you say that?!! Horses are more than just pets and friends, they are a part of our history. I'm a vegetarian, and I am not proud to say this but the slaughter of cattle doesn't bother me as much. The history of the west was written upon the back of the horse. If we keep slaughtering these horses it will be like killing our past which will only destroy our future.

No chemicals in cows??
by: Anonymous

Are you out of your minds? Cattle are injected with so much CRAP that the ORGANIC market is greatly flourishing! Cattle are injected with more hormones and shots than a pet horse EVER thought of having!

Get a grip people. Anti slaughter promoters use line of thinking as a way to discourage people from eating horse meat.

And by the way, horse meat was sold in grocery stores in 30's...so get off your high horse and realize not everyone has to stick to the strict dietary codes of the vegan tree huggers.

Hey, Afraid-To-Use-Your-Name-Anon ~

It's YOU who is showing ignorance, not BoIsMyBud. He wasn't talking about shots, knothead. He was talking about bute, ivervectin, moxidectin, Banamine, fly spray, and just about everything else we put on or in our horses. That's why the new rules have been set down by the European Union.

These drugs - plus many others - remove a horse from the food chain PERMANENTLY. That's why American horses are not fit for human consumption.

You owe BoIsMyBud an apology, but I'm sure neither of us are going to hold our breath waiting for it.

For all those who say we need slaughter - again I say: WE HAVE SLAUGHTER. We have always sent horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter, and we still are. There is NOTHING stopping anyone from taking his horse to an auction and selling it to a killer buyer. So, if slaughter is the answer, why isn't it working?????

whoa
by: Anonymous

wow you are disgusting. you are selfish, rude, obnoxious and have no feeling or heart. too say that an animal can die is like tying a human to a pole killing it.

Drugs
by: Suzanne Moore

Sorry, Anon - don't you have a NAME? - but cattle and other food animals are NOT getting the same drugs as horses. Awwwww! Hate to disappoint you. Are you perhaps thinking of ivermectin? Just happens that the ivermectin given to cattle is quite different from the formulation for horses - which DOES state on the label: not for use in animals intended for human consumption. It also warns against giving it to anything except HORSES.

Even with cattle - a pour on and an injectable, neither of which is available for horses - there is a waiting period and prohibition from giving it to young calves.

You people had better stop playing games - this is serious business, and no one is making it up. Why don't you get in touch with the European Union and let THEM explain the rules to you?

horse slaughter is horrible
by: Brena

Horse slaughter is horrible! Apparently your not fond of horses. I strongly dislike your 'story' or should i say insult to all horse lovers including myself horses take alot of money but also give alot of money. Not only that butt they could also be you best friend you can talk to them when you have problems plus they teach you to be response-able on top of that they let you have fun. I have no idea why you said that! Again horse slaughter is horrible!!!

Re: Breeders and slaughter by: Gerri Boggs
by: Suzanne Moore

Gerri, didn't you READ my post right below yours? We HAVE slaughter! The horses just go to Canada and Mexico instead of Illinois or Texas. Now, WHY would we "need" any more slaughter than that?

If these cruel, heartless breeders KNEW slaughter was NOT an option, they would stop over-breeding simply because it would cost them big bucks which is all they care about.

Not only that, the slaughter of American horses is living on borrowed time. The new regulations from the European Union - the ONLY real market - will exclude virtually ALL American horses because of contamination by chemicals that are banned from the human food chain. If you don't know about that, better educate yourself before you post.

shows your stupidity!!! HAHA!!!! cows are given all the shots!! You should see some of thing things they pump in these calves! ITS CALLED THE NEW MARKET!!! cows are now getting shots just like horses. some places may still not give shots but LET ME JUST TELL YOU THAT THEY ARE!!!

Breeders and slaughter
by: Gerri Boggs

Unfortunately, as long as we have futurities, derbies, stock shows, races, contests, etc... we WILL have people trying to make a buck by breeding up that next "winner." This adds thousands of horses to the population every year of every breed imaginable. Now put into the mix the back yard breeder that thinks he has the next "winner" and we have people breeding up mediocre horses. NOW add to the mix the owner who has no concept of taking care of 1 horse, seeks status by getting his "black stallion" and breeds up who knows how many horses with no proof of lineage, no socialization, and no future. There are THOUSANDS of each of these types of owners, which will never quit breeding out of greed, or ignorance. The slaughter houses do NOT starve horses to death in the short time they are at the plant. The OWNER has already done that for months or years beforehand. So, yes, as the other poster stated, to control the population. Until you can figure out some way to keep joe blow from breeding up hundreds of thousands of horses a year, we need horse slaughter!

YOU NEED TO BE SLAUGHTERED
by: Anonymous

Along with you, and all people who think and feel like you... shoudl be SLAUGHTERED!

It's NOT the same,
by: BoIsMyBud

Cattle are specifically bred to be meat animals, and, as stated in a previous opinion, are not given any medications, chemicals, etc. that could harm the humans who consume them. Horses, on the other hand, are given wormers, medications, and pain-killers that can make people sick. So, unless we, as Americans, specifically start breeding horses for slaughter, anyone who eats horse meat is endangering their health. Horses helped man conquer America, as well as providing them with companionship. Killing horses for consumption is just like killing dogs. American thinks this is totally unacceptable for canines, so why not equines?

Also, horses are born with a flight or fight response to being in small, tight spaces. That is why many horses are nervous about being in trailers. Horses at the slaughter plant are placed in chutes that make them frightened because of the condensed space, as well as being transported in overcrowded trailers. Cattle are relaxed by being in small spaces and therefore slaughtering horses the way that cattle are slaughtered is NOT humane whatsoever.

to control horse population?
by: Dr Pepsmoke

Shouldn't population control come before insemination? Stop the insanity and stop breeding so much, that is control, not culling animals. Horse slaughter is cruel and unusual punishment for animals who have done no wrong. Pets, racehorses who have outlived their u$efulne$$ it'$ all about money. Nothing more. Just money. Admit it. Just money.

We don't need horse slaughter
by: Anonymous

Not to be rude, but you need to step back and do some research. Are you not aware of the EU regulations?

If you want to slaughter horses then you need to raise them as such. If the horses will be raised to race, work, for service, therapy, etc., then they are not food animals. The US has no tracking system for horses as with livestock. Without tracking, the horse cannot be certified that it is drug free of prohibited substances. One common med that is given to horses causes aplastic anemia in humans. Take a look at the med labels for horses. They all say NOT INTENDED FOR FOOD ANIMALS.

Horses are not food animals in our country. They should be humanely euthanized as we do with all no food animals.
