The "Upside" of Slaughter ?

I know it's not a popular opinion, but having been raised with - and a LOVER of horses - for over 30 years now, the need for slaughter houses is a necessity.
Again, I know it's not popular, but what would you rather see - a horse put down humanely or be starved to death because the owner can't feed it?
And yes, most of the horse facilities were humane, but there will always be some jerk who will ruin it for everyone.
In my humble, 30+ years of experience, in my opinion, we need to do something, and banning it won't help. Instead, the horses are shipped thousands of miles, with food and water lacking, to Mexico or Canada. How is this better?
Seriously folks, most of the people who side with banning the facilities love animals and I understand their desire, but it is truly misguided.
Just my two cents worth,
