The need for Horse Slaughter Plants

I personally being a horse lover think its wrong to slaughter horses. but the question that has recently came to my head is where will unwanted horses go if not to slaughter? the way our economy is now some people cant afford them. and i dont think its fair for horses to starve or be set loose. and we definately need slaughtering plants in the US because otherwise they are being sent to foriegn countries where they are no longer protected by American laws.
