Rain Rot Relief and Cure Aid

by Dale Anne
(Redwood, NY, USA)

Ingredients needed:
Vaseline (store brand)
Gold Bond medicated Powder for anti-fungal properties

Mixing methods require working the two ingredients together, with your hands. Bare hands are fine but I put on disposable gloves.

A separate small plastic food storage container is good for mixing and has a lid for storage. After using half a large container of vaseline, I mix the remainder up right in the vaseline tub.

Mix about a cup of vaseline with a couple handfuls of powder. This mix will be grayish in color and does not require super precise measuring. You want to get the powder onto the affected area so be intuitive and do not skimp.

Liberally spread the ointment onto the affected area and massage if the horse will let you.

After treatment, I have turned the horse out to pasture. They may roll, but the layer of ointmet is still there. If it picks up dirt from rolling, I clean off the excess but find that the medicine keeps working.

May be applied daily or less, keep coated and this stops the spread of rain rot with new growth replacing the loss of hair in the affected area.

This was used to totally cure a large patch of rain rot on Espresso, a skittish thoroughbred. If you have an ointment to get rid of the skittish part, let me know.
