i want to buy a horse that is 15 yrs old. some say the older the horse is the better for being calmer n easier to ride.i am not an experience rider. i am a first time buyer.
Answer: No, I don't think 15 is to old. The more experience the horse has the better. However, it's not only the age of the horse that you need to be looking at. You should also consider the horse's personality. He should be a calm horse and not spooky or crazy. Check out the buyers guide on my Buying A Horse Page, it would be good for you to read.

Quarter horse/Pinto mix

I am getting a new horse and i am very excited. I had a horse when i was young, she was an Arabian horse and well things did not work out so we sold her. The horse i am getting now is a quarter horse/pinto mix and i am just wondering is this a good breed to get? What should i watch out for?
Answer: I happen to like Quarter horses my self. I think they are a great breed. It's not so much the breeding that you have to watch out for. You have to establish dominance right away. Don't let him get anything over on you or he will see you as beneath him in the pecking order and you will have problems.
If I were you I would spend the first couple of days just getting to know your horse and letting him get to know you. I would spend a lot of time just petting and grooming him. You can learn a lot about a horse just by spending time with him. If you have any trouble, let me know.

First Horse

How to I gain my horses respect and trust. This is my first horse and I am not to sure how to act around her to become the herd leader. Could you please explain in more detail how to become the head mare. And what are some exercises I can do with my horse achieve this. Thanks so much!!
Answer: Audery, there are way to many steps for me to explain them all here. I am in the process of writing an ebook on groundwork. It will be available within the next couple of weeks, so be sure to check back often.
In the meantime, never show fear around your horse, he can sense it and will take advantage of it. Never let him get away with getting in your space, uninvited. Never let him get away with nipping, biting or being generally disrespectful. Don't punish him, just correct him at the very moment that it happens.
I also think that if you have never been around horses or know how to work with them, you should at the very least take a couple of riding lessons. You have to remember, a horse can be your very best friend, but he can also hurt you if you don't know what your doing.
You can also check out some of the questions ask here previously, in the groundwork section. There are a lot of tips there. Also, in the Horse Talk section of this site, read the Ray Ainsworth interview. You will definitely learn something there.
