Miniature Horses

Miniature horses are very friendly and interact well with people. They are often kept as family pets, some of which are kept indoors.

They are found all over the world and come in various colors and coat patterns. The height of the animal, which, depending on the particular registry involved, is usually less than 34–38 inches as measured at the withers.

These little horses were developed from multiple sources. Many different pony breeds were bred for small size, including the Shetland Pony and the Dartmoor Pony. There may also have been an infusion of bloodlines from certain breeds of full-sized horses.

The AMHA, founded in 1978, lists two classes of miniatures, class A, being 34 inches tall or less, and class B, ranging from 34 to 38 inches tall.

Their therapeutic value is also growing for use with disabled children and adults. Read this article on the value of the therapeutic horse.

These little minature horses can be great companions as well as pets. They eat the same things as regular sized horses and are kept in much the same way. Although, some people do keep them in the house. One question, How do you house-train a horse???
