logical point of view

by Rico McCobb

Lets get this straight people, horses are livestock species just like cattle and pigs and sheep. Catttle are slaughtered in the same manner as horses, but i do not hear you complaining on how evil it is to slaughter them like this while you are enjoying your evening hamburger or steak.

There are thousands of unwanted horses in this country and they have no home. They are more often than not, abandoned and die of malnourishment. Is this more humane then sending them to a slaughter house?

Also lets not forget there are very strict laws on slaughter in the US, not so much in Mexico. So lets just ship them and forget. No! You want to talk about inhumane, this is it right here. Dont get me wrong i love horses, own one myself, would I sell him to the slaughter house, no. But that's because in my state its legal to bury dead horses, in many it is not, so in those states what do you do with a dead horse?

What do you do with a sick injured or horse that is dangerous to people and other horses? euthanize them? Then what, cremate them, dump them in the landfill?

Lets not forget the over 32,000 wild horses that cost taxpayers 6 million a year, they are just sitting in BLM holding pens unable to be adopted because of unwanted horses. What is your answer to this problem? I would like to know.

At first when I read your response you had me wary. I thought I was a firm believer in against horse slaughter, I own a horse and your quote "logical" counter arguement seemed to make sense.

Then I read viki's response and I returned to my stand against horse slaughter! I know that I would never sell my horse for slaughter and the thought that anyone would surprises me! You should check out some other websites there are some great pieces of literature that answer some of your questions such as what would happen to all those horses that aren't being slaughtered?

ALSO, I was reading the other comments and I would like it to be known i don't regard you as "bad" person and I am disappointed that some people would not respect your opinion.

Thank you

Guys this is absurd, i live on a working cattle ranch in texas and can honestly tell you horse slaughter isn't as evil as you are making it out to be. I have done the research for a class and i have seen the results myself, what is inhumane is banning horse slaughter. The land simply cannot support all the unwanted horses being dumped, and people won't take them to be euthanized and rendered because that costs money. If the slaughter houses in the U.S. were reopened then we could put restrictions on them, the ones in Mexico and Canada don't have those. So by banning it you are subjecting what are magnificent animals to a cruel death at an unrestricted processing plant or to starve to death because they have grazed all of the grass off. It's not that anyone is stupid, you just need to educate yourselves to the truth of the matter, not just what the majority of uneducated, easily persuaded people think.

You people need to pull your head out, I am a horse owner and love it, but am also for horse slaughter.

I live in the middle of Wyoming and i can see the affects of not having a horse slaughter market. Here people are dumping horses out on blm with wild herds and these unwanted horses are just starving.

This has also effected the market. Horses are a dime a dozen. I use horses every day and they are not my pets. I guess you could say they are more of a tool for me, and i'd rather shoot one my self or send it off to slaughter than to see my horses starve to death out on the range lands.

If the liberals want to ban horse slaughter we should send about a 1000 head and put on Oboma's white house lawn and see how well he likes them.

I also ride saddle bronc and these horses live a better life than most people in the U.S.

Hi Rico, if horses are livestock then why when I moved to my 35 acres, with my 7 horses did the ad department tell me I could not use them for ag excempt taxes, BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT LIVESTOCK. They are not in the same class as cattle or sheep. Horses have helped man kind for centuries building countries, plowing, getting goods to market, and this is the thanks they get. If you can't afford your horse, for god sake don't send them to slaughter, give them to someone who can afford it, or have them put to sleep by your vet. I blame this on the owners, that just don't care. The race horses that have made most of their owners rich, just disrequard them like a used rag when they stop making them money. WHY???? This is not fair to these horses, and they surley don't deserve the creul ending they endure from these slaughter houses. I am wondering do these people eat their cats, and dogs. What's next children???My horses are like my kids, they are treated very kind, I have 2 that were going to slaughter, and if I had the money, trust me, I would take in thousands of these wonderful, majestic, beauties. I think you should get your facts straight before you go spatting off at the mouth about things you obveously don't know about.

I can tell you are going to get LOTS of NEGATIVE comments on this topic.
I agree with the other Anonymous commenter -

If you agree that horse is livestock just like cattle sheep and pigs then you are clearly wrong!

Horse Slaughter should not be happening.

If the process & purpose is to cut down on horse numbers by slaughter and 'recycle' the horse 'meats' for human produce then that is just disgusting.

This topic is strongly opposeable by horse lovers, or all NORMAL LIVING CARING people. (i don't care about my language - after all i'm only 13)

Think about what and where your writing something.

I was going to reply to Mr.Rico but someone already did a good job. Sir, your on another plane. I bet you would consider the bald eagle as poultry and eat one fried or baked.
If you compare a horse to a steer I would Imagine you would do the same with an eagle and a chicken. It don't sound right does It? Well neither did the things you said. Man you are unbelievable and of all the places to toss Ignorance. WOW!

Rico, horses are not livestock like cattle, pigs and sheep. They are classified as food animals. Neither the USDA nor the FDA classifies horses as food animals. That is the difference. Name one animal that we slaughter that we do not consume.

You forgot to clarify the strict laws on slaughter. There are strict laws on livestock slaughter. There were meager regulations on horse slaughter.

One big difference is that there are no drug protocols for horses. The FDA classifies horses with dogs and cats. All horse medication is clearly labeled ?not for food animals?. So how was it strictly regulated without drug protocols?

BTW-you do realize that thousands of horses were sent to Canada and Mexico when the three plants were open, yes? Did you complain about Mexico and Canada being inhumane then? Please provide facts for your comments on abandonments and starvation. Have you compared that to dogs and cats as well as cattle? I bet you would be surprised at the results.

Are you saying that horses owners are not intelligent enough to plan for the death of their horse? What you do with a sick, injured or dangerous horse is you call the vet and have him humanely euthanized. Once the horse is dead, you can send him to a renderer, bury him (depending on laws in the area) or cremate him. If you do not want the responsibility of ownership, that?s an easy one. Don?t own a horse.

Ah, the 32,000 in holding pens. A few months ago the BLM said 33,000 but they won?t tell you what happened to the 1,000 horses. Let?s see, if we return the 22 million acres that were taken away from the wild horses and burros that is legally theirs, I bet you could easily fit 32,000 on 22 million acres. No cost to the taxpayers. Or, how about removing the 7+ million privately owned cattle that have taken over the land. Surely, if the land can sustain over 7 million cattle, it can sustain the less than 50,000 wild horses and burros.
