Ignorance must be bliss...

by Avid Equestrian
(Michigan, USA)

Wow, I hate all of the one-sided "facts" that anti-slaughter supporters are fed. First of all, there is an abundance of horses.. we all know that one. If there wasn't, then slaughter would never even arise.

With the 100,000+ horses that are unwanted each year, they are put at risk for starvation, abuse, neglect, and painful intolerable suffering in fields of farms where their needs are overlooked.

People have a strong belief that horses should not be slaughtered, but what about cows? Chickens? These are just as domesticated to some people as a horse is to others. People are willing to eat Bambi, but not Flicka? This is just unbelievably ignorant.

It costs upwards of $200 for a vet to humanely euthanize a horse, and if you do not have access to land, you have to purchase a burial plot, and a permit, and rent a backhoe. This can be pricey, and many people who cannot afford vet treatment to "fix" their lame or unwanted horses in the first place cannot afford the costs associated with humane euthanasia.

I could go on with my arguement, however i'm sure people will just tear it apart on here since a majority of readers have anti slaughter beliefs. By the way, I am a life-long equestrian, and I love horses more than I love most people in this world, and I am for their welfare 100%.

Humane Slaughter?
by: Horse-Thief Victim

I'm a former horse owner with a sister in the biz.
We've talked about this a lot (I had the gelding I rode to Nationals stolen, so this is something very near to my heart.)
If you think the slaughter ban is "saving horse," you are sorely mis-informed. Currently horses are being trucked to Canada or Mexico, I don't know how many fall in the truck, but the ones that make it to their destinations face less regulatory protections than they did in US plants.
I would support the re-introduction of slaughter IF there was independent 3rd-party monitoring of the plants. While it kills me that my buddy may have faced that fate, it kills me worse to know he was likely scared and hurt when he did meet his end.
Until the horse industry changes its practices and stops the reckless over-production of horses, there has to be a way to deal with the excess.
We are all guilty of supporting slaughter -when we buy a ticket at a racetrack or -when we breed animals that are not the best at what they do, are lacking in conformation or -when we support the breeders who do by buying sub-standard stock that has not been gelded or spayed.

Dear Idiots

Slaughter is thriving. We are slaughtering just as many horses -if not more - since the US plants closed. The only difference is that the horses are shipped to Mexico and Canada instead of Texas and Illinois.

So, if slaughter is the fix for all these "unwanted" horses, WHY HAVEN'T THEY ALREADY BEEN SLAUGHTERED?? How can anyone be such an idiot? I think all of you are paid shills for the pro-slaughter lobby and you've never even SEEN a horse. If you were actually in the biz, you would know slaughter is still available. So, you're not only idiots, you are sleazy idiots.

Seriously?

It is not the fact the they are slaughtering horses. I, myself have slaughtered cows and chickens IN A HUMANE WAY! they abuse these poor creatures that do nothing but love you!? if they took care of the poor things, did it not awfully where the horse suffers more pain in the getting there and staying there before their ultimate demise, that would be a TOTALLY different story. i am not totally against it, we do need some of those things. in my perfect world, there wouldnt have to be horse slaughter. i own 3 horses and i love them and could NEVER do that to them. but if we really do need to continue this, why cant they just be humane about it? honestly? all of you jerks who think that they dont feel anything? have you been within 10 feet of a horse? they are caring loving creatures.

Problem solved!

Your right. But lets go one farther since money Is our life here. Lets take all the orphans In the orphanages ( humanus erectus) and give them to the hospitals for them to have a lethal Injection avoiding all the pain they endure being abused and sexually molested by perverts so this way they would avoid these Issues In under a half an hour. I see no difference. People are animals just like monkeys and horses and If you doubt this look Into their dna and how close they are to us animals. I'm for It. Man we would avoid the tax burden that some of us cry about. We can build an Industry so then people can screw as much as they want and can. No worry about birth control or what the hell are we going to do with this kid. I'm shocked no one here thought about this yet. Then after a few years we can expand this Into Mexico and Canada. Who knows where the end Is. Imagine getting a deal with communist China. No more one child families. We'll do pick up service you know to add a little stimulus to the jobless country of ours. Our factories will be going 24/7 7 day a week, year round. I mean there are so many unwanted and abandoned kids this Is exactly what the doc ordered. So, any comments?

What ARE You Talking About?
by: Suzanne Moore

First and most important: Slaughter is alive and well. If you are heartless enough to give your horse a horrific death, just tote him/her on down to the nearest auction. There the "meat men" will be MORE than happy to take the poor thing off your hands.

They'll truck it on down to Mexico or Canada and it will be slaughtered. Just like if you sent it to Illinois or Texas.

See? NO PROBLEM. Just one thing - after you rid yourself of these horses, NEVER get another one!

you are absolutely right!

i feel the same! These anti slaughter people say that slaughter is awful and shouldn't exist, but who is going to pay for the unwanted horses that would have gone to slaughter?

Last summer, we took in a horse that had been dropped off on the side of the road. He was underweight and had torn his hooves apart running up and down the road. We spent hundreds of dollars taking care of him in the months that we had him, but in the end, we discovered that he had acute navicular and had to be put down at our expense. If the slaughter houses were open, he would have been spared the abuse and neglect that he had received by his previous owners.

It is simply not an affordable option to have the slaughter houses closed, and those who advocate the closing of the slaughter houses need to pick up the bill fore the 100,000 unwanted horses that exist in the US today.
