I support humane horse slaughter.

There are such a huge excess amount of horses because people think if a minimal performing mare gets lame or doesn't win they can breed her. Well when you breed a crap mare to a crap stallion then you get more crap.
Your not going to get the high performing money winning horses by breeding horses with horrible conformation no matter what dicipline you ride. Horses with bad conformation break down faster and become lame.
It is not cost effective to keep a horse that cannot perform. Not only that but these horses ruin the rest of their breed by being bred.
Having a horse put down can cost any where from 150 to 300 dollars. Then you have to pay the rendering company to pick the animal up. Who wants to pay 600 dollars to get rid of a dead horse? I know many people who are good horse owners who could not afford that.
It's true slaughter horses are bought at auction but there is a reason they are at the auction. I've worked at a sale barn. The animals that come in are usually drugged because they are either very lame or very un-tame to the point where they are dangerous and un-handleable.
In regards to rendering... what do you think they do with cattle? Ever herd of tallow? It's in marshmallows. Bone becomes buttons. As my Agriculture teacher says, "They use everything but the oink". At least the animals no matter if they are cattle, horses, sheep or pigs are used completly and nothing goes to waste.
The picture of the trailer is a cattle trailer. I'd much rather have horses be slaughtered in country humanely than outside the USA and have them suffer.
