Horse-lover Made Problem

I believe that the real issue is not the slaughter of horses, but the treatment of horses in general. One of the reasons horse slaughter is such a big issue is the over abundance of horses.
Horses are being bred faster than people can find homes for them. If people just took a step back a truly evaluated the over all situation before they breed/bought a horse there would be a lot less unwanted horses. The less unwanted horses there are the less of them are going to slaughter and bad homes.
If the horses being used for slaughter were kept in clean, well kept facilities and given a vaccine to end their life would all the controversy still exist? Sure, there would still be people who were adamantly against (myself included) it but it wouldn't be the huge fiasco it is today.
I am a life long horse lover and have visited a few slaughter houses in Canada. I would not wish that fate on any horse, but the sad fact is that the horses are going to die no matter what happens. They will either go to slaughter, be eunthanized, or be mistreated to the point of no return.
So, if the horses going to slaughter were treated better what would the huge problem be? It still makes my stomach turn thinking about horse meat being eaten, but if they were treated better wouldn't it be a better alternative to neglectful and abusive homes?
So, personally, I think if number of horses being breed dropped then so would the massive numbers going across the border to slaughter houses. If you truly want to make a difference on the topic of mistreatment and slaughter of horses spread the word... STOP BREEDING! Many people don't want to hear it but in reality it is the only way to really end horse mistreatment.
