There are many different horse training techniques that are being used today. However, the more videos I watch, or horse books I read, the I find some horse trainers claiming that their way is the best way.

No ones horse training methods are the only, or the best way to teach your horse. Teaching methods will vary from person to person, and horse to horse. Most people get caught up in the hype that some trainers put out, and truly believe that their way is really the best way.

Never be satisfied with learning only one horse trainers techniques. This could severely limit the potential of you and your horse. Learn as much as you can from whomever you can.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of fine horse trainers in the industry today, and all have great horse training techniques.

Names such as: Pat Parelli, Clinton Anderson, Gawani PonyBoy, Dennis Reis, Chris Cox, Ray Ainsworth, all come to mind. Each of which have their own horse training techniques that have worked very well for them. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best techniques for you and your horse.

In my opinion, some of the best horse techniques of all time were taught by Monte Roberts and Jesse Beery. I don’t agree with all, but learn what you can, and take what you need.

5 Reasons You Should Train Your Horse Now…

1. Safety - This is the most important reason to train your horse. Horses are very powerful animals. Believe me, you do not want to be on a horse that is out of control. There are hundreds of people every year that are hurt or killed by horses. Horses can be one of the most wonderful experiences in your life. They can also be the worst!

2. Bonding and Respect - When training your horse, you not only teach them to respect you and your space, but you are also establishing a bond. When you ask your horse to do something, the correct way, and he figures it out, you praise him. This creates trust for you and your horse. No matter what horse training techniques you use, always praise your horse when he gets it right.

3. Become more horse savvy - The more time you spend working with your horse, the more you will learn about his behavior and what makes him tick. You will learn to spot trouble before it happens. “Know what’s happening, before whatever happens, happens”! You will know the things that might make your horse “blow up”. With proper training, your horse will look to you for guidance before he freaks out.

4. Value - The value of a well trained horse is substantially higher than one that is not trained. Even if you never plan to sell your horse, your relationship will be much more pleasurable.

5. Enjoyment - It will be much more enjoyable for you and your horse if your not fighting for control all the time. It’s no fun to ride a horse that is out of control. It is also very dangerous. If you are physically and mentally exhausted when you finish your ride, then you know it is time for a horse training plan.

When you are training a horse, some techniques will just feel more natural to you. The more natural and comfortable they feel to you, the easier they will be to implement with your horse.

Really good trainers will not only train your horse, they will teach you how to train your horse. Training your horse can be a very rewarding experience, not to mention the bond you will create.

That’s why it is so important to learn as much as you can from as many different trainers as possible. This way, if one technique doesn’t seem to be working with your horse, you will have other techniques to try.

Since the huge wave of Natural Horsemanship, horse training techniques have come a long way. However, there are still some people who think that abuse and harsh techniques are the only way to get a horse’s respect. What they don’t understand is that, their horse does what they ask out of fear, not out of respect or trust. I would much rather know that my horse wanted to be with me because he trusted me, not because he was afraid.

There are some newer techniques that have emerged over the past years that are quickly rising to the top. Methods such as clicker training and T Touch have proven to be very effective horse training methods as well.

Before you decide on any one horse training technique, always remember, it is better to have more than one arrow in you quiver, just in case.
