Horse Abuse
by Nicole Calmes-Bush
(Calgary, Alberta, Canada)
I hate it when I here about horses being tyed down and beaten if they don't want to do something, or if they do something wrong. It's not fair to the horses.
I know somebody that has a horse that was abused. She bought this nice mare and she is slowly starting to trust her now. She has a filly that I believe is 1 now, and she's great.
But the old Mare of this filly was tyed down and beaten, and I get very angry at people that do this sort of thing.
I think those type of people should be put away and not be allowed to have any type of horses.
I feel the same about slaughter houses, they get meat buyers to bid and buy horses that still have years left in them to go and get killed... I think that should be illegal, it shouldn't be aloud to happen.

I'd rather they go to something useful
by Alix
(Wyoming)
I'd rather that the horses that I can't keep go to something useful, like food for people over-seas than starve to death on some pasture.
Wouldn't you rather see your horse that you can't afford to keep be food so it has a purpose? I'm not saying that it wouldn't be sad or anything, but come on. Get Real!
I'm also not saying that what slaughter houses do is humane, but just change the method of killing the horse and it's good. That is all people are worried about isn't it? The inhumane treatment of horses at slaughter houses? Well, do something about that rather than closing the slaughter houses.
Horse meat is a pretty big economical impact for us. So open the slaughter houses back up and change the method of killing the horses.
I own over 60 head of horses and it's hard trying to support them as well as myself and family. I'm not saying that if the slaughter houses opened back up that I would send all my horses to them, but its an option if I ever needed to do something. I know they are other people who agree with me somewhere out there so speak up!

Horse slaughter
by MJ Wilson
(Valley, Wa. US)
You ask what will we do with all the "unwanted" horses, like it's our problem, how about this.
Now this is how we can start handling the problem in the right way.
This statement is from Mayor Bacon, Kaufman Tx, ex-home of Dallas Crown, foreign owned horse slaughter plant. "We enforce monetary penalties for the irresponsible over breeding and inhumane treatment/disposal of animals. Breed for greed in the equine world is running a close second to puppy mill operations. Lack of accountability in both these so called businesses comes at great cost to the tax payers.
Whether it is unwanted strays or horses being dumped at kill buyer auctions, taxpayers ultimately foot the bill for picking up the tab. The national problems and costs from over population of canines and felines are well documented. As with puppy mills, there is no legal oversight for horse breeders to be accountable for their products that continues to "feed" foreign interests and flood an illegal US horse meat market.
The US General Accounting Office, and Department of the Treasury would do well to carefully examine, audit and vigilantly follow the paper trail (or lack thereof) for puppy mill proprietors and livestock auctions. Both are known for their cash deals as are owners, trainers and breeders in the horse racing industry. These suspected undeclared revenues from the aforementioned might well provide funding for another bail out of corporate America!
Domestic, sports and recreational animal breeding must be stringently controlled with enforceable Federal legislation. Without an act of congress, there will always be a perceived window of opportunity for the speculator to breed for greed at the expense of taxpayers and the too high costs of brutality, neglect and inhumane treatment of our nation's animals."
Mayor Bacon.
That's the truth. Now for the "humane" treatment we give equid here in the states please check out these USDA recently released documents and video from the Animal Angels.

Owner, Jacobi Group Bloodstock and Specialty Insurance
by Ruth Jacobi
(Cottonwood, Az)
I have loved and respected horses always, and generously support animal welfare of all species.
Our country has developed a quick-paced, sound-byte mentality that serves to polarize people over issues like this one, rather than encourage quiet and purposeful thought that could better lead to comprehensive solutions based upon real-world conditions.
When the extravagantly funded animal rights organizations started working to close American slaughterhouses, I knew that it would ultimately cause the dreadful conditions for horses that have now come to pass. This is largely due to the fact that animal rights organizations do not promote animal welfare and do not fund or operate animal welfare shelters, but simply have as their goal the agenda to remove meat of all kinds from the American diet, one lawsuit at a time.
The absolute fact is that horses are chattel and can be bought and sold, and from this we need to inform our remedy for their current plight.
Horses will be sold for slaughter, if not in America, then in Mexico, where the conditions for these horses are more reprehensible than almost any American could imagine.
The solution is to open numerous small slaughterhouses across our country, so that the transport time is short, and the locations are continually reviewed by local animal welfare people. That way, the business of slaughter would remain in America, a country that by far has in general, higher regard for animals than almost any other country in the world, and could be under local review for its adherence to sound animal husbandry.
Slaughter in and of itself does not have to be something from the bowels of hell; it can be managed humanely and carefully, with proper care and respect given to the animals. In addition, American facilities would by law need to ascertain the ownership of the horses, decreasing the current "theft bonus" for horses being transported into Mexico.
I have heard people defend the way horses are treated on the way to slaughter by saying that God put animals on the earth for man to use, but God does not tell us to cause untold suffering to the beasts of the field, but to be good husbands of them.
Anyone who believes that it is a God-given right of a person to so use a horse in any manner that causes him to be terrorized, brutalized, callously injured or treated, deprived of water or feed, and deprived of his sense of well-being on his way to an inhumane and tortured end is a person who obviously uses the concept of "God" as a means to abrogate his own personal responsibility and moral imperative.
The issue of horse slaughter is not an easy one to address, but humane slaughter is better than starvation, and better than indiscriminately turning horses loose to be hit by vehicles or caught in the multitudinous snares of our no-longer agrarian culture and that, friends, is what is happening now.
There are not enough rescue sites to absorb all unwanted horses, and morality is not a one-size-fits-all; sometimes it is more moral to kill, than not to kill. Our measure as individuals and as a culture is not in the killing, but in how the killing is managed.

I am NOT in favor of equine slaughter, however I do believe in euthanasia.
I do realize that with the state of our economy, more and more people will have to make the difficult choices of personal and family needs over pet and animal needs.
We have adopted 2 fillies. This doesn't make a dent in our area of horses that need homes. If we each can help in some small way... donating time or funds to rescue shelters, adopting a horse and giving it a forever home, participating in fund raisers for rescue ranches, increasing public awareness, sponsoring a horse, the list goes on and on.
I feel every owner needs to take responsibility for their horses. These animals may out-live the owners. Limit breeding.
If we have slaughter houses... then lets encourage governing agencies to hold those people accountable to provide humane conditions.
The down side is that the GREEDY BA%^*#@DS of this world will not show compassion over profit. Weren't we taught to do the right thing just because it is the right thing to do?
I have visited two rescue ranches in our area. They are "Walkin' n Circles" Edgewood, NM and "The Horse Shelter" Cerillios, NM. I applaude the work that all these people and the volunteers have done. Thank you.

Responsiblity and fixing the problems created
by Thomas Lee
(Crossville, Illinois)
As a horse owner and trainer on this side I have met many challenges. Training horses is very simple, educating the ignorant is a problem especially when the pro-slaughter folks see a little money.
The truth is the history of my fighting for the horses and exposing to abolish horse slaughter has been a merry-go-round. Personally visiting all plants in the US has urged me to continue.
Our win to close the US plants was only a small victory for me, as I knew many many more horses had been going to Canada and Mexico for years. Its not a secret any more due to the Internet.
Recently the FOIA has been released from the USDA document indicating the years of abuse and neglect that irresponsible people cash in on, there horses they could NOT trained or just wanted to sell one to get another for more money.
Its greed that promotes this business. There are two reasons the Cattle Industry supports horse slaughter. 1. The SouthWestern Cattle Raisers Association were getting paid $3.00 per horse slaughtered in Texas. 2. The cattle association said that they are in a similar business and that the Pork and Poultry should support horse slaughter as well, or the so called Peta people will shut them down..
What a bunch of BS we are NOT peta, we are responsible horse people that know the difference between horses and cattle. The history of these plants ignored Texas laws and ignored there fines. They paid no Gross Income taxes, nor export taxes, as most Americans are subject too. They had American Airlines for years shipping their product, when not exposing the truth, it was illegal in the state of Texas. These business lied to promote. There are old horses they are sick horses and there are wild and crazy horses. Truth is a horse is a fight or flight animal, so these people really didn't understand horses, nor the pro slaughter people. The lies of unsold horses are merely signs of the economy, not the closing of a few foreigners businesses that promoted abuse and neglect for years. Most of these slaughtered horses were trained horses, many had shoes on them. These foreigners know in America they had no competition and every business loves that, especially if the Tax payer pays for their inspections and they don't have to pay gross income taxes. How about giving American business tax breaks and tax these foreign companies. How about educating our children with qualified teachers so we can make more products here instead of in Korea or Japan. American needs a overhaul and learn to not reward irresponsible people. Please call your represenatives and senators, ask them to wake up and pass our horse bills.

Slaughter: Friend or Foe?
When does not having horses killed somewhat quickly in a slaughter house, compare to horses being starved or let go on a highway, any different from the pain and suffering they may feel in a slaughter house?
I know that not all horses are killed efficiently before they move down the slaughter line, but none of the horses are killed when they are let go into the streets, nor are they killed when they are never fed and starve to death.
Is it more painful to go through slaughter or never be fed or hit by a vehicle?

Mixed Feelings
I have to agree with you in that, I too can't stand the thought of horse slaughter. That being said, what are we to do with animals that people can't take care of any longer?
I am in a position to take very good care of my horse, but many find themselves having to part with their animal.
As you say many horses are going to be killed. We owe it to them to make this as humane as possible.
I think banning the slaughter in the US is not a good alternative. Let's not make this situation worse by sending them on long torturous journey to their death.

Unnecessary Evil
by Kaylen Davies
(Seattle, WA, USA)
Let me tell you that I myself am a horse fanatic. I personally don't own any horses, but I hope to someday. Anyway, the way horses are being treated is completely and utterly unnecessary.
I understand why we kill them, but I don't understand why WE as a nation have to feed people overseas with horse meat. If they want horse meat, they should kill their own horses, but in a HUMANE way.
The captive bolt is NOT a humane form of slaughter. Euthanasia is. I support euthanasia, NOT the bolt. No horse should have to suffer that terrible fate.

The "Upside" of Slaughter ?
by Corinne Logan
(Bothell, WA)
I know it's not a popular opinion, but having been raised with - and a LOVER of horses - for over 30 years now, the need for slaughter houses is a necessity.
Again, I know it's not popular, but what would you rather see - a horse put down humanely or be starved to death because the owner can't feed it?
And yes, most of the horse facilities were humane, but there will always be some jerk who will ruin it for everyone.
In my humble, 30+ years of experience, in my opinion, we need to do something, and banning it won't help. Instead, the horses are shipped thousands of miles, with food and water lacking, to Mexico or Canada. How is this better?
Seriously folks, most of the people who side with banning the facilities love animals and I understand their desire, but it is truly misguided.
Just my two cents worth,

PMU Industry and Horse Slaughter... Go Hand in Hand!
by Tina Westrope
(Wesson, Mississippi)
It is my opinion that the PMU industry is a type of horse slaughter. PMU mares are lined in facilities and gave little water to survive on, while people receive the urine from the mares to produce Premarin and other hormone drugs for women.
The less water that is given to each horse, the stronger the urine is when harvested. This means more money for the industry.
When a horse does not receive enough water into there body, they are not able to digest food properly. Sometimes the food that they do receive, (which is mostly grass or hay) will turn into concrete inside the intestines. Eventually nothing can move through the intestines and they will colic and die.
This process does not happen overnight. I cannot imagine any animal living under these conditions. It horrifies me to know what happens to the mares, and how they are crammed into stalls that are not even big enough for a goat, in my opinion.
These horses are used as lab rats, and because of improper care they in turn die a slow and horrid death. If that is not enough, their colts are taken and either killed at birth, or taken at six months of age and sold to "Kill Buyers" that will take them to slaughter for meat (which is a delicacy in some countries). Some are even sold for their skin.
Pony skins which are used for nonsense items such as purses, coats, etc... These items are worthless to me, but if you go on Ebay and other sites you will see that these purses and shoes will cost you a lot of money. There are a few colts that will see tomorrow thanks to horse rescues. My heart goes out to those men, women, and even children that sometime stay up all night to nurture these beautiful creatures.
I had a colt that did not take to her mother for the first 5 days of her life and we took turns feeding her so she would get the milk to survive.
It is hard taking care of one colt, much less 20 or so that these rescues take into there facility at a time.
These facilities are an inspiration to me. I am proud that GOD gave each one of these people a heart big enough to love and care for each colt, and a big enough heart to let go of that colt when he or she finds a permanent home.
Women, there are other alternatives to these medicines. Please talk to your doctor on your next visit and he can prescribe something that will work for you. You can help save these horses.
I hope that people remember these are the animals that carried our fore-fathers on their back and help found our nation and make it what is today. I wonder, have most people forgotten this fact?
Thank You, Tina Westrope

The Meaning Of Rescue
by unknown
Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed, All nicely tucked in my warm new bed, I'd like to open my baggage, Lest I forget, There is so much to carry- So much to regret.
Hmmmm...Yes, there it is, right on the top, Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss, And there by my perch hides Fear and Shame. As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave, I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me, But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage: Will you help me unpack? Or will you just look at my things - And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, to never repack? I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see, But I do come with baggage - Will you still want me?

IF WE WERE TO OPEN HORSE SLAUGHTER IN THE U.S. THE NUMBER OF HORSES BEING MOVED ACROSS THE BORDER WOULD DECREASE AND THE HORSE ECONOMY WOULD IMPROVE GREATLY.
WE NEED TO OPEN IT IN ORDER TO LET THERE BE A BALANCE. YES THIS MAY NOT BE WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO HEAR, BUT IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO IMPROVE THE PROBLEM THAT CLOSING THE FACTORIES HAS CAUSED.

Humane
by Tyler
(Nebraska)
Sure horses are living and breathing animals, but were they not put on this earth by god to help the humans? Or do you not believe in god?
How come is it humane to butcher cows pigs goats and sheep for human consumption but try to eat a horse and all of the sudden you are inhumane?
I would be willing to bet a large sum that most of the horses slaughtered are no longer useful. And if you think it is wrong to slaughter horses for human consumption why cant you just close the slaughter houses that slaughter horses for human consumption?
I love horses just as much as any body but tell me this, what do you do with an old horse that has bad teeth, a swayed back and is no longer useful? If you were rich you could buy special feed for it and keep it in a box stall until it ends its life. But to many times in that same situation the owner is not rich the horse winds up unfed and uncared for and starves to death wondering what it did to deserve such a poor life. That is what is inhumane.

Pictures
by Miss.Molly
(Kansas)
There was a picture of a trailer going down the road. That was a bull wagon. They carry bucking bulls, and bucking horses in that to rodeos.
And as for the picture of the horse with a scratched up head, he probably had a disease like worms, or was bored and was rubbing his head on the fence.
The one of the dead horses in the trailer... well that is sad. when i went to colorado for my sisters rodeo finals there were about 3 horses that died. the people opened up their trailer and the horses just fell out. it was because of the altitude and the climate. those are all pictures of everyday occurances that are sad, but not cruel at all.

This Animal HAS YET to be seized by local animal services.
(Florida)
In October 2008 I saw this horse hobbling on three legs, obviously in horrible pain from 1/4 mile away. I went and knocked on the door of the trailer and asked the owner if I could take a look at the horse. They said I could and that he had stepped on a nail a week prior. They had simply yanked the nail out and gone on with their business. No vet had been notified! I then saved his life. According to the vet 100% he would have died had I not stepped in, called the vet on numerous occasions and treated his hoof wound twice a day for two months in a row (all for free). He finally recovered from the hoof infection and I dropped him back off with his **** owners.
Two months later I ran into his owner in town. She said, "we need your help again someone reported us to the county animal services."
I agree to come to their house, the horse now only weighs 730 pounds (a healthy horse of his height 16 hands should weight 900-1000 lbs).
I agree to feed him once every day and he gains 40 lbs in one month under my care.
They then quit their job and say they can no longer compensate me for the gas to get to their house and feed him.
It's been two-three months since I stopped caring for him and he has only gained 20 more pounds.
They call me today claiming they were reported to county animal services again. THEN they have the nerve to ask me if I had reported them. I said no and strongly encouraged him to let me help them find the horse a new home and he says "I don't wanna give him away because I've already put so much money into him." Keep in mind this is a horse that would be worth no more than $500 in a GOOD market (we are in a ***** one).
It seems the county is going to be called with complaints about this poor, sweet animal until the end of time and no one with any power by law seems to care AT ALL.
I'm so sad and passionate about this issue.

Horse slaughter- Unecessary & cruel!
by Amy Matthews
(Clanton, AL)
I've been doing research on horse slaughter for the past few months & have discovered how horrible & inhumane it really is.
First of all, I can't understand why someone would kill a horse at all, unless it was being humanely euthanized due to a life threatening injury. What's worse is that the people ( if you wanna call them that) don't put them down humanely. The horses suffer a slow, agonizing,& painful death.
Secondly, there is no need to eat, or use any part of a horse for personal pleasure. These horses have served their owners faithfully, or were obtained illegally, just to be tortured & killed.
I'm appalled at the lack of feelings or compassion these killers have. And now people are stealing horses out of others pastures & stalls only to be found cut up & beheaded for horse meat on the black market! Horse slaughter sickens me. And I can't even put into words how I feel about the people that allow this to happen. I honestly wish those people had to be loaded, hauled with 1000 other horse killers, stuck cheek to cheek for hours on a nasty hot or freezing trailer, then tortured & still half alive when they were strung up by one leg getting cut up piece by piece. Would they still like slaughter then?
And for those who say they don't have any other choice because their horse is sick or injured or just too old to ride anymore- that's just pure laziness & lack of concern for your animal. Call a vet & have them humanely euthanized!!!

The truth is...

You people are idiots who are unwilling to truly research on unbiased information about horse slaughter in the USA. The rules of the USDA make sure the animals ARE humannely put down. There is a serious problem with unwanted horses due to the fact that we may no longer have the option to have them sold to be put down. Now people are dumping them off to starve to death. So who are the real criminals??

Necessary Evil?
by Katie
(Ohio, USA)
I have an 18-year-old Standardbred mare who raced several years ago and was abused. There's a chance that she would have gone to slaughter had I not bought her almost 10 years ago. I didn't want to see that happen.
She was thin, unkempt, and wary. She also didn't want much to do with human contact. But she did come up to me. I bought her. She is a kind and loving soul who I would wish no harm on. Not even a year after I bought her, she returned the favor and saved my life.
I don't like the thought of slaughter, and even thinking about my mare going there to end her days brings tears to my eyes. But neither would I wish for her to be left to starve in her old age.
I'm moving overseas and can't take her with me, my dear, sweet old friend. She has seen enough torment in her years that I wouldn't wish her to be loaded in a truck filled with other, strange horses, and shipped for however long it takes to get to the nearest slaughter house without food or water, perhaps wondering why she deserved such an end and what happened to the human that once loved her so much.
I would rather that, if she is slaughter-bound- and I pray she is not- that it is somewhere humane, not surrounded by fear and blood and whatever else.
To bury her or cremate her would perhaps cost too much. And, honestly, slaughter is not going to be gotten rid of, not entirely. And people will find ways around whatever rules there are for shipping these gentle and sweet creatures across whichever border where perhaps they aren't as humane.
These are just my thoughts. But I do hope that whoever gets this amazing mare gives her the dignity and respect that she deserves, not only in life, but also in death.

(Newfield, Me)
Tears come to my eyes, as i read about horse slaughtering. I truly believe there are many ways to save the horses, of America.
To many of us use things, animals included and destroy them after our needs are meet.
We need to wake up and take charge of our responsibilities. All the horses are our buddies, treat them so!!! owner/buddyvillehorsetraining.com

The Horse Is Only The Beginning!
by Eddie D.
My name is Eddie, I have been buying and selling horses for 25 yrs. Never has there been such a problem with horses. Something that started out as a hobby, got into a good thing. Just as selling cattle, sheep, etc.
Why would someone rather see a horse suffer, starve, or be beaten to death, instead of put to use to feed other animals such as zoos, animal shelters, and even starving people.
But yet since all these peta people and some Washington politics stepped in, they have even closed down all the sale barns. What is left, open top dollar may be $100.00, where it use to be $1000 to $2500.00.
Now I am seeing some of the local shelters saying they are about to run out of money. So what next? How much longer can this go on until we finally run out of space.
If someone buys a horse they had better plan on keeping it for the next 20 yrs. What happens when they get tired of it? Where does it go?
Americans can waste more than any animal on the earth. I have read articles about these crazies, that want to boycott eating turkeys on thanksgiving, stop the killing of chickens and hogs.
If the American ranchers and farmers don’t pull together and stop this now, what is to stop them when they go after the cow, sheep or goat? We, as bad as it sounds, are carnivors.
Since the beginning of time, man has been a meat eater, so please tell me where is this headed? Killing horses is no worse than killing any other animal. Why couldn't the government step in and regulate the slaughter houses, build rules and carry them out.
Stop double decker trailers. Don’t take the animals, except on single floor trailers. Inspect the animal, farm raised, and wild horses, turn them back as well.
I get calls every day saying please send money to the animal shelters to feed the dogs and cats. What would happen if these people say, well we saved the horse, now lets go after the dogs and cats, no more putting them down. Let that go for 5 yrs and see what a mess that would be.
I try to tell people, the horse is only the beginning. Even if they did open the slaughter house, it would take years before the horse world would be back to normal.
I bet if you shipped a load of horse meat and a load of rice to a starving country, see which goes first.
One more thing people don’t think of since the halt of the slaughter house, this has not hurt just the sale of horses but all that goes with it, such as trailers, hay, leather products, trucks, etc.
Now I just heard that some of these so called activist are now saying that fox hunting is cruel to the hounds. They should not have to chase a fox that long and far, it makes them tired, go figure.

Horse Sales
by Ann
(Farmington, MO)
I go to horse sales frequently and there are many men who are there for one reason: to by horses for slaughter. Every weekend, I see many beautiful, healthy young horses with great potential go for $50 or less to these men who give these amazing animals such a cruel fate.

Where are these slaughter houses?
by Kimberley Bates
(Herford AZ)
I would like to help save a few of these horse's, I also do not agree with what is going on. It seems that it is all about a buck.
We have so much unused land here in the US why not let the horse's run free and live off the land like they did in the olden days.
I live in AZ and would like to know if there are any slaughter house's here near the border. I am very willing to go across the border and rescue some.
Please let me know if you have any information that can help me help them.

One Solution That Might Be Hard To Accept....
by Kenzie
(Grand Rapids, Michigan)
There is one solution, that people might not have thought of yet, STOP breeding for a year or two. Only breed when necessary, or just let the big shots breed.
If we all stopped breeding for a while imagine how many horses wouldn't have to be transported to Mexico and Canada..... I know how hard it might be to accept, but it could work, have we ever tried? No not yet so why not?
I know how I might sound like an ignorant child, but even though I am one, I still care about horses. ALL those videos make me cry to see innocent horses being killed for the Japanese people to eat! Honestly it is just sickening.
Horses raised this country up, and what do we do, just watch them be killed for no reason.....It is just like murdering our founding fathers before they could finish building our country.
Just consider this, if we all stopped breeding for just a year, the numbers go down by, let's say, at least a thousand or so, how happy would all those horse rights groups be?
Please listen to my idea and maybe we could JUST try it.... what if it did work? We could just consider it and and spread the word about the cruelty these horses suffer.

The Other Side of the Story.
by Cori
(Louisiana)
All of the websites that you come to talk strictly about, saving the horses and how well they should be treated, and what to do with your unwanted horse.
They don't talk about now, after the plants have been closed, how the horse market has fallen to its knees, and how people can't give horses away.
They don't talk about how people are turning horses out in the middle of town so someone else will have to deal with them.
No one thought about how many horses that are now with no place to go, and no one being able to afford to take care of them.
Personally I have 40 head of horses, and I am in a financial bind. I can't give horses away at this point. I know there are a lot of other people out there like me in the same situation.
All of these groups should have thought about the consequences to these actions. I understand regulating, but not shutting down completely.
