Horse Slaughter Ban

by Meghan
(New York)

I am currently writing an article on this topic for a senior project. I am a horse person who understands the troubles and rewards of keeping horses. The reason some people are so against slaughtering is because they do not understand what it is like to own horses.

Many believe that they are more like pets than farm workers. Which is very true in that they are not used for labor much anymore. However, they are not your cat or dog kind of pet. Horses are very difficult to care for and are extremely expensive.

Although I do not send my horses to slaughter, I understand the reasoning behind those who do. There is little that can be done about it.

City people merely suggest getting the animal euthanized. Well, it may not be expensive for a ten pound dog, but it is a little different for a 1,000 pound animal. It is just too expensive to euthanize a horse. Usually if a horse needs to be put down, a family friend comes over with his gun in hand.

What this whole horse slaughter ban debate comes down to is city versus country face off.
