Horses are correctly classified as livestock by the USDA. As livestock they have a purpose, if their purpose of a sport horse, breeding horse, or companion have ended their new purpose would be slaughter.

I own horses and feel the compassion towards an end to equine suffering. However, horses that would have died humanely in a slaughter plant are now left to starve in a pasture, or fend for themselves when they don't know how in the wild. These horses' owners simply do not have the money for euthanization so it is not an option. Look at the facts and past your emotions!
