The Draft Horse

Dancer (Belgian Draft mare)

A draft horse is a large horse bred for heavy tasks such as pulling loads and farm labor.

There are a number of different breeds, but all maintain the common traits of strength, patience and docile temperament.

Some of the different draft breeds include the Belgian, Clydesdale, Shire and the Percheron.

These horse breeds range from 16 - 19 hands and can easily weigh in at over 2000 pounds.

I guess in most parts of the world today, the horse has long since been replaced by the tractor and more sophisticated equipment. However, they were once a vital part of farming, logging, pulling carts and wagons and plowing the fields.
