The American Quarter Horse
The American Quarter Horse excels at sprinting short distances. They have a short refined head, a strong, well muscled body, a broad chest and powerful rounded hindquarters. They usually range from about 14 - 16 hands tall. Their popularity and adaptability has allowed them to become the most popular horse breed in the United States today, and they have the largest breed registry in the world. Quarter horses have been used for almost everything, from working ranches to the show ring. They have proven themselves time and time again. Their compact body makes them ideal for reining, cutting, barrel racing and any other western event.
The name Quarter horse came from their ability to out-run other breeds in races of a quarter mile or less. Their colors vary from black, brown and bay and include the palomino, buckskin, gray and chestnut.
